AutoElecOz’ own Land Rover Discovery 4 dual battery system is a custom solution that maximizes under the hood space whilst keeping everything neat and tidy. This system includes the Discovery 4 dual battery tray along with a side mounted REDARC BCDC1225D DC to DC in-vehicle battery charger. Made of only high quality marine grade materials, this tray requires no drilling into the vehicle body. It has a place for everything, including factory wiring harness clips.
The included REDARC BCDC1225D is a 25A DC to DC charger and is the most advanced dual battery charger on the market. It has dual solar and DC inputs and allows for simultaneous charging. It is suitable for charging all AGM, gel, standard lead acid, calcium and LiFePO4 batteries.
**Please note, battery is not included in this listing.
Discovery 4 Dual Battery System Features:
- 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel
- Designed to bolt in to existing captive nuts so no drilling into the vehicle body is required.
- Convenient holes to locate factory wiring harness clips that original Land Rover has no provision for
- Includes best in class REDARC BCDC1225D 25A DC to DC in-vehicle dual battery charger
- Heat shield to protect charger from heat emitted from the cooling system and power steering reservoir tanks
Uses For a Dual Battery System
The dual battery system is designed to ensure a secondary, or slave battery, is kept charged at the correct voltage all of the time. It also isolates the dual battery so that your vehicles main battery is not discharged when using your power hungry appliances. A dual battery can be used to power appliances like 12V fridges, camping & work lights, cooking equipment, mobile phone chargers, laptops, coffee machines and more. It is a handy system to have when you are caravaning, camping, or any time you are in need of a power source whilst out on the road.
Installation
Our Land Rover dual battery system is easy to install, with no vehicle body drilling required. It is designed to bolt in to the existing captive nuts of the vehicle. We walk you through the installation in this quick video:
FAQ
What batteries do you recommend for this Discovery 4 Battery Tray?
We recommend either Exide ORB34-DC48 or the Optima D34 Plus.
What is the purpose of dual batteries?
Simply put, a second or dual battery allows you to run normal electrical accessories from your vehicle’s power supply. Appliances like 12V fridges, camping lights, TVs, coffee machines and phone and laptop chargers.
A good dual battery system isolates the main battery so that using your appliances does not lead to you not being able to start your vehicle.
What is the best dual battery system?
There are three main types of batteries used for dual battery systems. These include lead acid deep cycle, AGM or Lithium.
In our installs we recommend either AGM or Lithium batteries as they offer better discharge and charge efficiency, longer life span and the ability to deep cycle whilst maintaining power.
These batteries are often more expensive up front than the lead acid variety, but you get much better cost efficiencies over the lifespan of the battery.
Lithium batteries are best avoided under the bonnet due to heat. When used, we mount these in the rear quarter panel of the boot.
What is needed for a Land Rover Discovery 4 dual battery system?
A proper dual battery system requires:
– a second (dual) battery
– a means of charging that battery from the vehicle’s alternator, or from solar power, or both.
– a way of isolating the second battery from the main crank battery
How do you charge a second battery while driving?
The easiest way is to install a dc to dc in-vehicle battery charger. We recommend the best in class REDARC BCDC battery chargers. These allow simultaneous charging from both solar power and your vehicle’s alternator.
Can you run two batteries on alternator?
A car alternator is more than capable of charging two batteries. The important part is how those two batteries are connected. That’s where the REDARC BCDC1225D comes into play. It ensures proper power management between the two batteries, to ensure:
1. Your main crank battery is not drained so that you can always start your vehicle.
2. Maintain 100% power in the dual battery where possible at all times, to allow you to use the appliances you need power for.
Do I need a second battery for a car fridge?
Technically no. But if your 12v power is wired through your vehicles ignition, like a traditional cigarette lighter, the fridge will switch off when the vehicle is not on.
If it doesn’t switch off, it will continue to drain your main battery’s power whilst the car is not on. This could lead to a flat battery when you come to start your vehicle the next time around.
Can I run a deep cycle battery and a starting battery in parallel?
When connected, two batteries in parallel essentially make one larger battery bank. In this case, it is best to keep the batteries of the same chemistry.
However, with the REDARC BCDC1225D we include in our systems it means that you can use differing battery types for the main crank battery and the dual battery.
